The Boys in the Bushes

by Sonya Sones

On Her Way: Stories and Poems About Growing Up GirlEveryday
on the way home from school
as we pass through the gate,
all the boys in our class
who have crushes on us
lie in wait.

Then they suddenly
leap from the bushes
and give us a bop.
And the strangest part is
that I feel kind of sad
when they stop.

And the other weird thing
is that when a boy
likes me the best,
he will usually
hit me much harder
than all of the rest.

I would sure like to hear
someone try to
explain to me why.
Is there anyone
reading this poem
who will give it a try?
